Abby is a male giraffe, even though his name might suggest otherwise. Abby stands for Abnormally Big Baby. When he arrived at Areena Private Reserve, he was just a baby and was being bottle-fed after his mother fell victim to poachers in a local reserve.
Abby has settled in very well and has contributed to a total of three baby giraffes. Today, he lives happily with his family in the reserve. Nevertheless, he loves meeting new people—especially if they bring food. As soon as he hears the safari vehicle, he approaches and wants to be petted.
His home is also home to wildebeest, impalas, zebras, blesbok, waterbuck, nyalas, ostriches, tortoises, emus, and a variety of birds.
We will meet at the pier around 8:30 a.m., or after the ship has cleared. After a transfer of approximately 45 minutes, you will reach the private resort. You’ll transfer to safari vehicles and head out to meet Abby, learn about him, and of course, take photos. You can also feed Abby (be warned – he loves to slurp!). Afterward, the vehicle will take you to a restaurant where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery overlooking the river while having coffee and light snacks.
The Abby portion, including the short safari vehicle ride, lasts approximately one hour (maximum 10 people per vehicle).
The ranger is English-speaking.
